Snoring & Sleep Apnea Treatment

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a potentially life-threatening sleep disorder characterized by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. These episodes, known as apneas, last for 10 seconds or longer and can occur hundreds of times each night. Sleep apnea affects about 4% of men and 2% of women, often causing loud snoring and disturbed sleep, which is especially noticeable to bed partners.

There are two main types of sleep apnea:

  • Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): The most common form, caused by a physical blockage of the airway, often due to the relaxation of throat muscles.

  • Central Sleep Apnea: Occurs when the brain fails to send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing.

Untreated Sleep Apnea Risks

If left untreated, sleep apnea can have serious health consequences. Repeated pauses in breathing can lead to:

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)

  • Increased risk of heart attack

  • Increased risk of stroke

  • Chronic fatigue and daytime drowsiness

  • Mood disorders, such as depression and anxiety

Sleep apnea stresses the cardiovascular system due to reduced oxygen levels and increased carbon dioxide in the blood during apneas. Over time, this strain significantly increases the risk of heart disease and other serious health conditions.

Snoring & Sleep Apnea Evaluation at Dallas ENT Group

At Dallas ENT Group, we specialize in diagnosing and treating snoring and sleep apnea. Many patients are referred after evaluation by a sleep medicine physician and completion of a sleep study. However, if you have not yet been evaluated, our comprehensive sleep apnea assessment includes:

  • A detailed medical history focused on snoring, apnea episodes, and daytime fatigue.

  • Physical examination of the head, neck, and airway.

  • Assessment of nasal obstruction and other factors that may contribute to breathing difficulties during sleep.

  • Measurement of key health indicators such as blood pressure, heart rate, BMI (body mass index), and neck circumference.

Based on these findings, patients may be referred for a sleep study. Often referred to as a "split-night study", the severity of a patient's sleep apnea is evaluated during the first half of the night. During the second half, technicians test the effectiveness of a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine, determining the appropriate mask fit and pressure settings.

CPAP Therapy for Sleep Apnea

A Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine is the most commonly prescribed treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. It works by delivering a steady stream of air through a mask, which keeps the airway open during sleep, preventing apneas and promoting normal breathing.

The CPAP machine ensures proper ventilation and oxygenation, helping users avoid the dangerous pauses in breathing that characterize sleep apnea. The device operates in a biphasic fashion, facilitating both inhalation and exhalation for a comfortable breathing pattern.

CPAP Therapy

CPAP Success & Challenges

While CPAP therapy is highly effective, not everyone finds it easy to use. Research indicates that up to 50% of patients struggle with CPAP compliance, and some studies suggest non-compliance rates could be as high as 70% to 80%. Common challenges include discomfort from the mask, difficulty adjusting to the pressure, and lifestyle interference.

For patients who tolerate CPAP well, regular follow-up visits with our team ensure long-term success and adjustment support.

Advanced Surgical Options for CPAP Failure

For those who struggle with CPAP therapy, Dallas ENT Group offers alternative solutions through our partnership with the Surgical Institute for Sleep Apnea (SISA). The SISA multidisciplinary team, consisting of ENT specialists, orthodontists, and craniofacial surgeons, evaluates patients who have failed CPAP therapy and recommends surgical or advanced therapeutic options.

Inspire Therapy

Inspire is an innovative, FDA-approved therapy that treats obstructive sleep apnea by stimulating the hypoglossal nerve to prevent airway collapse. Inspire is a small device implanted under the skin and activated during sleep to keep the airway open.

Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP)

UPPP is a surgical procedure that removes excess tissue from the throat to widen the airway. This procedure can be highly effective in reducing snoring and improving airflow for patients with sleep apnea.
