Head & Neck Masses
At Dallas ENT Group, our team of experienced ENT specialists provides comprehensive evaluations and treatments for a wide variety of head and neck masses. These masses can be caused by numerous conditions, ranging from benign cysts to more serious malignancies. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical, and our specialists are here to guide you through every step of the process.
Below are some of the common head and neck masses we evaluate and treat:
Enlarged lymph nodes, also known as lymphadenopathy, occur when lymph nodes in the head and neck region become swollen. This can happen due to infections (such as a cold or throat infection), autoimmune conditions, or in some cases, cancer.
Symptoms include:
-
Swelling in the neck or under the jaw
-
Tenderness or pain in the affected area
-
Fever or night sweats (if related to infection)
Thyroid masses or nodules can form in the thyroid gland, located at the base of the neck. While most thyroid nodules are benign, some may require further evaluation to rule out thyroid cancer.
Symptoms include:
-
A visible lump in the neck
-
Difficulty swallowing or breathing
-
Hoarseness
-
Unexplained weight loss or gain (in cases of thyroid dysfunction)
Salivary gland masses may form in one of the major or minor salivary glands, including the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands. These masses can be benign or malignant.
Symptoms include:
-
Swelling near the jaw, mouth, or neck
-
Dry mouth or difficulty swallowing
-
Pain in the area of the mass
-
Facial nerve weakness or paralysis (in cases of malignancy)
The parotid glands, located in front of the ears, are the largest of the salivary glands. Masses in the parotid gland are often benign but can occasionally be malignant.
Symptoms include:
-
A firm lump near the jawline or ear
-
Swelling that may come and go
-
Pain, particularly when eating or talking
-
Facial nerve involvement (weakness or paralysis)
Submandibular masses occur in the submandibular glands, which are located beneath the jaw. Like other salivary gland masses, these can be benign or cancerous.
Symptoms include:
-
Swelling or a lump under the jaw
-
Pain and tenderness in the area
-
Difficulty swallowing or dry mouth
-
In rare cases, facial nerve involvement
When to Seek Medical Attention
It is essential to seek medical evaluation if you notice a lump or swelling in the head or neck that persists for more than two weeks, continues to grow, or is accompanied by pain, difficulty swallowing, or changes in voice. Early diagnosis increases the likelihood of successful treatment and improved outcomes.
